Dunbeath Estate: Historic Castle with Incredible Grounds Overlooking the Coast of Scotland

Nestled atop the cliffs overlooking the North Sea, Dunbeath Castle is a historic gem that graces the Scottish landscape in the British Isles.

Originating in the 15th century, this castle underwent a significant transformation in the 1860s. The eminent Scottish architect of the time, David Bryce, lent his expertise to remodel it in the Baronial style.

Stepping into this enchanting castle feels like entering a fairy tale. Its interior boasts an intricate turnpike staircase and concealed spiral staircases tucked away within numerous turrets. Throughout the property, you’ll find exquisite period details, all meticulously preserved over the years, as it remains a cherished family residence.

The castle features several grand reception rooms facing eastward, each offering sweeping views of the sea through large windows. In total, Dunbeath Castle boasts 13 bedrooms, with 8 designated as principal bedrooms, each named after great naval battles and adorned with unique character.

The castle’s surroundings received their own makeover in the 19th century. An impressive ‘keyhole’ drive was designed to create a dramatic approach to the castle, framed by the landscape. On either side, two walled gardens add to the estate’s charm.

Spanning an expansive 28,500 acres, the Dunbeath estate showcases some of Scotland’s most stunning topography within its great coastal wilderness. It encompasses 12.5 miles of flowing rivers, 4 hill lochs, and approximately 4 miles of rugged coastline.

This impressive estate encompasses moorland, riverside terrain, and coastal stretches, making it a unique blend of opportunities for sports, fishing, farming, and significant environmental initiatives. There’s also the potential for green energy projects, including extensive peatland restoration.

Beyond its natural beauty, the estate dedicates over 500 acres to farming activities. Additionally, it boasts 20 houses and cottages, serving both staff accommodation and generating income through short and long-term rentals.
