Snooping Around

Designer Maisie Violet Rees’ Birmingham, England Apartment

Maisie is all about color and confidence when it comes to decorating a home. She’s on a mission to show you that putting your own spin on your home doesn’t have to be overly time consuming. She’s all about easy and budget-friendly design hacks that will help you create an interior that reflects your personality. Let’s get snooping around her apartment that is full of vintage finds and packed with vibrant colors.

HOMEWORTHY: How do you describe your interior design style?

MAISIE VIOLET REES: My style is maximalism on a budget, with plenty of upcycled eclectic homewares and splashes of bold color on a monochrome backdrop.

HOMEWORTHY: What are your favorite things in your home?

MVR: I love my selection of artwork and gallery walls around my apartment. I think choosing artwork to hang in your home is a really personal thing and can say a lot about your personality. I love to hang art that is pretty tongue-in-cheek and eclectic, but I also love being able to pay homage to my favorite musicians, films and artists within my gallery walls.

MVR: If there is one thing I certainly have an abundance of in my home, it’s my pillow collection! As my apartment is white, the quickest and easiest way to instantly add color and pattern when we first moved in, was to buy some really fun statement pillows that I could display around my living room to add character and reflect my sense of style (and humor!).

HOMEWORTHY: What item have you splurged on?

MVR: I’ve not really splurged on anything in our apartment, if I see an expensive piece of furniture or homeware that I know will look fab in our home, i’ll either try and source a cheaper alternative or recreate it myself! I love my pink velvet chair–I found it in a dumpster so it cost me nothing and I put it into storage. Once I knew what I wanted to do with it, I paid a local upholsterer to transform it into what it is now, a real vibrant and fun statement chair. I also had a local sign writer create the ’Stay Woke’ print in my lounge–I love that it was created bespoke and was hand drawn by the artist.

HOMEWORTHY: What’s on your wishlist?

MVR: I’d love a Dolce & Gabbana Smeg fridge. I’d happily spend two years eating Ramen packet noodles every day to be able to afford one of the bad boys!

HOMEWORTHY: Any sneaky decorating tips?

MVR: I rent my apartment, so i’ve been hesitant when it comes to painting or wallpapering as I know I’d have to put everything back to how it was when I eventually leave, so washiest tape and contact paper have been a game changer for me. It’s such a fun, versatile and budget friendly way to add pattern and color to your home. I’ve created confetti style wallpaper in my hallway, faux wall panelling in my bedroom and even covered all of my kitchen cupboards in it!

HOMEWORTHY: What is your go-to hostess gift?

MVR: You can never disappoint with a beautiful candle. It’s important your home looks great, but its got to small great too! If it’s presented in a beautiful candle holder, then it can sit pretty on your mantle piece or dining table and be reused once the candle has finished. I recently brought a couple from the new Jonathan Adler x H&M Home collaboration–they look stunning and smell amazing, too.
