Inside an Artist’s Historic English Countryside Retreat

Artist Kate Elwell welcomes us to her idyllic home in rural Shropshire, a quintessential English countryside retreat brimming with history, charm, and creativity.

Kate co-founded the program Master The Art with her father, which she runs out of her home studio, making her house both a sanctuary and a hub of creativity. The historic property once belonged to renowned poet Mary Webb and still retains many of its original features—including the enchanting Georgian staircase that greets visitors upon arrival.

With its many levels and winding corners, the home is full of character, and Kate has brought it to life with a layered, whimsical approach to design. Antiques, her signature hand-painted sconces, historic pieces, painted floors, wallpaper, and eclectic collectibles come together to create a space that feels warm, storied, and endlessly inspiring.
