A 1903 Farmhouse Surrounded by Beautiful Gardens in Washington

Photographer and gardener Lacy Edwards and her family have spent 25 years in this 1903 farmhouse in Bow, Washington.

It was derelict and falling down when they found it, but they saved the original floors and kept the 1903 layout, so the rooms are still small and cozy.

The carriage house next door, built to live in during a remodel, is furnished with character-filled pieces chosen for their patina, including an early-1900s draper's table that serves as the kitchen island.

Then there are the gardens, which steal the show. A formal parterre of boxwood hedges and a timber-frame folly is softened by vines and self-seeders that spill past the hedges. A glass greenhouse with a fireplace and antique furnishings is an outdoor room where Lacy and her husband start most mornings with coffee. The hydrangea walk was planted with future grandchildren in mind, chickens, dogs and a cat roam the grounds, and the vegetable garden, the first one they ever planted, is where her heart is.

For Lacy, home is about creating a space where family and friends gather, and where comfort matters more than perfection.
