An 1812 Connecticut Home Filled With Treasures From 200 Years of Collecting
For over 100 years, Great Elm South in Sharon, Connecticut has belonged to the Buckley family. Cameron Smith, grandson of William F. Buckley Sr. and nephew of William F. Buckley Jr. and Senator James Buckley, takes us through the house where his mother and her nine siblings grew up.
The original home dates to 1812. In 1929 his grandfather added two wings and filled them with tile, lanterns and furniture brought back from Mexico in seven boxcars, including pieces from Emperor Maximilian's personal suite. Along the way, Cameron shows us the three-story glass atrium where generations of the family have married, the living room where the Sharon Statement was drafted, a 1929 art deco bathroom with a copper rain shower, and the yellow 1950s bathroom his wife Liza restored tile by tile.
Every home has a story. This one has a hundred years of them.
