Inside a 19th-Century Southern-Style Greek Revival Filled with Meaningful Antiques

We’re in Locust Valley, New York, at an 1845 Southern-style Greek Revival residence defined by its graceful proportions and timeless architectural presence.

Its restoration is the work of homeowner and interior designer Janine Carendi MacMurray. As the founder of AREA Studio, her upbringing in Colombia, Sweden, Mexico, and Connecticut has informed her refined, collected aesthetic.

When Janine purchased the property, it was in disrepair. Today, it’s layered with meaningful antiques and heirloom objects from her family, bringing warmth, memory, and continuity into the historic structure.

Over nearly five years, she undertook a phased restoration that prioritized preservation—modernizing what was necessary while safeguarding original ceilings, moldings, and architectural character. The result is a home that feels deeply rooted, deeply personal, and unmistakably her own.
