This Color-Coordinated Wardrobe Doubles as a Jewelry Showroom in Brighton
Fashion and lifestyle content creator Alanna Doherty opens the doors to her favorite room in all of Groovy House — the one space in her Hove, England photography studio that no client is ever allowed to shoot in. This is her personal wardrobe, a lifelong dream finally realized, and it is organized entirely by color, from the shoes to the clothing to the jewelry. Yellow walls, chosen specifically because the color hadn't appeared anywhere else in the studio, set the stage for open shoe shelving mounted on adjustable wooden battens, an idea suggested by her mother so the shelves could be repositioned as her shoe collection continues to grow.
The room is split by color story, with warm oranges and yellows on one side and cooler blues and greens on the other, a system Alanna says means she always knows exactly where to find what she's looking for. Clothing rails, sourced from Amazon after she decided a fully custom fitted wardrobe system was outside her renovation budget, hold color-coded blazers, dresses, and sets, while a DIY jewelry island — built from an Ikea kitchen island and hand-tiled by Alanna herself — became, in her words, the best tiling job in the entire house. Small curtain-covered storage nooks beneath the island hide overflow, made from fabric-store remnants and a simple curtain rod in under ten minutes.
A hand-built wavy mirror frame, inspired by designer Gustaf Westman's sculptural pieces but made affordably by hand, hangs above a jewelry display where a wavy kitchen transition strip has been repurposed to hold statement necklaces and earrings from Alanna's own brand, July Child. A dedicated desk area, complete with an orange Apple Mac on loan for the studio and playful "Mac Room" wallpaper, gives her a permanent spot to edit photos without disturbing the rest of the space, while favorite clothing pieces from designers like K Collective and Tongoro hang ready for their next shoot. A Keith Haring print, a Christmas gift from her partner and a nod to Alanna's own Keith Haring tattoo, watches over what she calls the happiest, most joyful room in the entire house.
