This Marrakech Riad Blends Art, Fashion & Moroccan Craftsmanship
We’re in Marrakech, visiting the home of fashion industry legend Trino Verkade, CEO of the Sarabande Foundation.
Trino began her career in fashion as the very first employee of the late, great Alexander McQueen. She later worked with the iconic American designer Thom Browne before returning to London to lead the Sarabande Foundation—a charitable organization established by McQueen to support emerging artists and creatives.
Her Marrakech riad is a reflection of that mission. Filled with works by artists supported through Sarabande, the home is a celebration of art and craftsmanship on every level. From the intricately tiled pool area on the ground floor to her bedroom door made from painstakingly carved bone, Trino’s commitment to supporting artistic expression is visible in every detail.
Affectionately called “Birdcage,” the home takes its name from its courtyard-style design—open to the sky and frequented by birds—as well as the ornate ironwork reminiscent of cages. The bird motif appears throughout the riad: in a gorgeous blanket from India, a silk tapestry from Alexander McQueen’s studio, and the fabric on an upholstered bed frame.
“Birdcage” is the kind of home you’d never want to fly away from.
