A Breathtaking 17th-Century Hacienda Filled With Art and Antiques

Artists Laura Kirar and Richard Frazier take us inside Hacienda Subin, their extraordinary 17th-century home in Mérida, Yucatán, which they discovered as a jungle-covered ruin and have spent years carefully restoring.

Laura and Richard preserved this hacienda’s 13 Moorish arches, original stonework and layers of patina while thoughtfully introducing colorful tile, woven sisal, sculptural details and modern comforts.

Inside, nearly every room reflects their shared passion for collecting, from Mexican folk art and ceramics to pieces gathered on travels, furniture Laura designed throughout her career, and objects Richard has collected for decades.

Laura also shares how her background in sculpture and interior architecture shaped the home, including the fantastical Morocco Room, a guest suite built with the work of numerous local artisans.
