A Washington Insider’s Art-Filled Historic Home

We’re in Alexandria, Virginia, visiting the stunning home of Megan Beyer, former U.S. Director of Art in Embassies.

Megan and her husband, Congressman Don Beyer—a former U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland—quickly swooped in and made it their own. Having spent several years living abroad for his diplomatic post, Megan was inspired to infuse the home with European design elements. Working closely with her talented designer, Bobbi Smith, they transformed the space into the light-filled, elegant retreat we see today.

Megan Beyer is a journalist, advocate for the arts, and public policy expert with a distinguished career spanning media, politics, and cultural diplomacy. She served as the Director of the U.S. State Department’s Art in Embassies program, where she promoted American art and fostered cultural exchange through curated exhibitions in embassies worldwide.

Throughout her public service and media career, Megan has remained deeply involved in arts advocacy, civic engagement, and diplomacy—shaping conversations around culture and representation on a global scale.
