Bohemian Style and Farmhouse Roots Define This Architect’s Home
We’re outside of Charlottesville, Virginia visiting the charming home of interior designer and architect Cathy Purple Cherry. Cathy and her family were looking for a long-term retreat that could evolve with them over time—one that balanced beauty, durability, and budget while feeling deeply connected to the land. Located on a mountaintop in Afton, Virginia, the home was intentionally designed to resemble an old agricultural building, blending into its surroundings with an agricultural-industrial exterior and expansive 190-degree mountain views.
Inside, Cathy—principal of Purple Cherry Architecture + Interiors—shares a highly personal home shaped by over 40 years in architecture and design. The bohemian interior layers reclaimed materials, antiques, global textiles, and durable finishes chosen to support real life with family, friends, and animals. Designed for one-floor living, aging in place, and extended family, the home includes multiple kitchens, art studios, guest spaces, and an upside-down floor plan that maximizes views. Throughout the tour, Cathy offers thoughtful insight into architectural planning, economical material choices, and how to create a calm, welcoming home that is beautiful, livable, and built to last. Enjoy!
