Bold Color and Collected Art Fill This Eclectic California Beach House

Architect Chet Callahan welcomes us inside his colorful and eclectic beach home in Ventura, California. What began as family surfing lessons at Mondo's Beach eventually led Chet and his husband to purchase a 1980s home overlooking the ocean, where they envisioned a gathering place for family and friends.

Drawing inspiration from California's mid-century coastal architecture, Chet reimagined the home with cedar ceilings, expansive ocean views, and an unexpected mix of bold colors and playful details. Working alongside interior designer and longtime friend Oliver Furth, he transformed the once-ordinary beach house into a richly layered retreat filled with contemporary art, custom furnishings, vibrant textiles, and whimsical touches. From the citrus-green kitchen and colorful tiled floors to the sculptural lighting and outdoor surf bath, every space reflects the family's creative spirit.

Throughout the home, an impressive collection of artwork sits alongside family heirlooms, handmade quilts, and personal mementos. Designed with entertaining in mind, the house is a place where guests can gather after a day at the beach, children can pile into the cozy den, and every room tells a story. The result is a distinctly personal take on California coastal living that celebrates art, family, and individuality. Enjoy!
