A Collected 1851 London Home with a Romantic English Garden

Director of JamJar Edit Melissa Richardson and her husband, historian and tour guide Charlie Alexander, have spent more than three decades making Chaucer House their own.

Built in 1851, the double-fronted Victorian villa in Brixton is a layered mix of antiques, collected objects and artwork by friends, with an eclectic sensibility that feels both personal and effortlessly lived-in. Furnished with finds from antique fairs, the house has evolved alongside the couple’s family life, with an open-plan layout that accommodates both work and entertaining.

Outside, the garden offers another creative outlet for Melissa, who uses flowers grown there in her pressed-flower artwork. The result is a home that reflects the couple’s shared interests, creative community and eye for the unexpected.
