Secondhand Finds and DIY Decor Transform This 1950s English Home

Creative designer Scarlett Lewis Ratcliffe has spent the past five and a half years reimagining her husband’s grandparents’ 1950s home in Wiltshire, England. Inherited by the couple, the house holds generations of family history, with her husband and his parents having grown up within its walls. While preserving that sense of connection, Scarlett and her husband have opened up the interiors to bring in more light and create a better flow for their young family.

Inside, Scarlett’s love of color, pattern, and contrast takes center stage. Murky greens meet brilliant yellows, bold prints mingle with handmade ceramics, and vintage pieces sourced from flea markets and secondhand shops lend the rooms a distinctly collected feel. With thoughtful DIY touches and an eye for unexpected combinations, Scarlett has transformed a home steeped in family history into a vibrant, deeply personal expression of her own creative sensibility.
