A Cozy Beach Cottage With English Charm & Layered Design

Welcome to the charming Byron Bay home of interior designer Louella Boitel-Gill—a light-filled Queenslander layered with color, history, and deeply personal design.

Originally from England, Louella brings a distinctly eclectic sensibility shaped by her background in furniture design and years working across the Australian design world. What began as a spontaneous holiday viewing quickly became a creative passion project, as she transformed this character-filled timber home into a cozy and expressive retreat that reflects her philosophy of nesting, storytelling, and lived-in beauty.

Inside, vintage finds sit alongside custom-designed furniture, meaningful artwork from friends, and playful details that give the home its unique personality. White walls create a calm canvas for bold color, while saturated bathrooms, industrial lighting, and collected objects from decades of travel add warmth and depth. From the welcoming kitchen at the heart of this home to converted verandas that now serve as intimate en suites, Louella reimagined the layout to create open, airy living spaces.

More than just a design showcase, this home tells the story of a life lived creatively. Every object carries memory and meaning, reinforcing Louella’s belief that a home should feel comfortable, layered, and deeply personal — a place where guests immediately feel at ease and everyday life unfolds naturally.
