An Artist’s West Village Apartment Defined by a Life in Theater

For more than two decades, playwright, actor, director, novelist, and drag legend Charles Busch has made his West Village apartment a stage of its own. Set within a duplex created from two former studio apartments, the home layers deep, moody colors with ornate wallpaper, collected art, theatrical details, and unexpected architectural moments.

At the heart of the apartment is a dramatic arch in the bedroom, designed by architect August Ventura to give the once-identical studio layouts their own distinct character. Throughout the home, Charles draws on a rich mix of influences—from Golden Age Hollywood and 19th-century Paris to the interiors of Diana Vreeland and the work of Dorothy Draper—while weaving in treasured pieces that connect the space to his family and his life in New York.

The result is an apartment that feels equal parts cinematic set, private salon, and deeply personal home—a reflection of Charles’s singular eye and decades spent in the world of theater and film.
