Inside A Designer’s Idyllic English Countryside Farmhouse and Gardens

Designer Harriet Anstruther welcomes us inside her enchanting West Sussex farmhouse, a characterful stone house that brings together centuries of Sussex architecture with her distinctly colorful, collected approach to design.

After restoring the rambling farmhouse with architect Tom Turner, Harriet filled its rooms with a deeply personal mix of inherited antiques, family treasures, art, and unexpected finds. Golden tones, rich pattern, and layered details unfold from room to room, creating interiors that feel both intimate and full of discovery. Many of the objects carry a personal history, including pieces inherited from her father, making the house as much a portrait of Harriet as it is a study in design.

Outside, Harriet turned a neglected garden into her first garden designed entirely from scratch. Brick pathways create a series of distinct outdoor rooms, balancing formal structure with the relaxed beauty of the surrounding Sussex landscape.
