Interior designers James Dolenc and Tom Riker have spent nearly two decades turning their Michigan retreat into a home that feels as though it has been collected over generations.

Built in 2009 near Lake Michigan, the classic farmhouse was designed with the character and patina of an older home in mind. Throughout the house, English-inspired fabrics, antique finds, family heirlooms, flea-market treasures and layers of pattern give each room a sense of history and personality.

James and Tom take us through their cosy den, characterful dining room, light-filled kitchen, guest bedrooms and charming screen porch, sharing the stories behind some of their most meaningful pieces along the way. From a grandfather clock that once lived in a hotel lobby during the Depression to a medicine cabinet from James's grandfather's doctor's office, the home is filled with objects that connect the couple to their families, travels and years of collecting.

For James and Tom, the home is ultimately a place to slow down, entertain and recharge — a layered, welcoming retreat that proves a new-build can have all the warmth and character of an old house.
